Manduria, also called “the City of Messapi and Primitivo” is a small town in the province of Taranto, famous throughout the world for the production of the renowned Primitivo di Manduria DOC wine, as well as for its Messapic origins.

The great ability to introduce Primitivo into the markets of Italy and the world began in 1932, the year in which the Wine Producers Consortium was founded in Manduria. The design of a project proved to be important: the concentration of the grapes from those lands in an efficient and suitable structure for winemaking and marketing.

Today, inside the 19th century headquarters of the Consortium, the Museum of the Civilization of Primitivo Wine is set up, an ethnographic museum on peasant civilization in which everyday objects used in homes and specific tools such as presses, used for winemaking, are exhibited. In addition to the museum visit, it is possible to book a tasting of typical local products and Primitivo wine (Memoria, Elegia, Lirica e Madrigale).

For wine lovers, Manduria is without a doubt the nerve center from which to start your Primitivo Wine Tour.

Some wineries

The Salento wineries are many and widespread throughout this vast territory. Identifying them and choosing which ones to visit can be complicated for those who don’t know the area well.

This article therefore presents our selection of wineries, highlighting the best tasting experiences of Primitivo di Manduria DOC.

Produttori di Manduria

A visit to the Produttori di Manduria Cellar is a journey into the heart of the tradition of Primitivo di Manduria, a fascinating journey that allows you to relive the history of a thousand-year-old vine.

The visitor is welcomed by the majestic nineteenth-century ‘star’ vaults of the oldest wing of the structure, surrounded by inebriating scents and then continues into the ancient underground cisterns, where the Museum of the Primitivo wine civilization is located.

Masseria Cuturi

Masseria Cuturi is a property of approximately 300 hectares located in the area of the municipality of Manduria, in the heart of Salento. To date it has 30 hectares dedicated to the production of native grape varieties including: Primitivo, Negroamaro, Aglianico and Minutolo.

A journey through the history, tradition and passion of this ancient but innovative Masseria. A walk from the vineyard to the cellar, with tasting from the barrels and aging tanks, up to the old oil mill, for the guided tasting of the wines.

Their tours include a guided tour of the vineyard and cellar and tasting of 5 labels: Bianco, Rosato, Rosso.

Gianfranco Fino

Gianfranco and Simona’s adventure began in 2004 with the purchase of a small Primitivo sapling vineyard of 1.30 hectares.

Producing wines with a strong territorial identity was the company’s first major objective, which was soon achieved thanks to the tenacity of a young winemaker who likes to define himself as a “vineyard craftsman”.

The vineyards, mainly cultivated with Apulian saplings, grow on red calcareous clay soil, caressed by the breeze coming from the Ionian Sea and the warm Apulian sun.

The company offers visitors guided tours to discover its vineyards and production techniques, as well as tasting its own Primitivo DOC.

Visits to the company can be carried out in both Italian and English.
